Although this may seem like a quick solution, squeezing blackheads can irritate the skin and sometimes make the affected area look worse.
Understanding why this happens can help you develop gentler skincare habits.
Blackheads form when oil and dead skin cells collect inside a hair follicle. The opening remains exposed to air, causing the material inside to darken. Unlike ordinary dirt, this buildup cannot always be removed simply by washing the face.
When you squeeze a blackhead, you apply pressure to the surrounding skin. This pressure can irritate the pore and nearby tissue, especially when you press repeatedly or use your fingernails. The area may become red, swollen, or tender afterward.
Sometimes, squeezing does not remove the blockage completely. Instead, the pressure may push some of the material deeper into the follicle, increasing irritation. This is one reason why trying to remove every blackhead manually may not produce the clear-looking skin you expect.
Repeated squeezing can interfere with the skin’s natural protective barrier. Once the area becomes irritated, it may take time for the skin to settle down. People with sensitive skin may notice redness or discomfort more easily.
