But his arrest didn’t magically restore Chloe.

She started weekly therapy with Dr. Patricia Vance and slowly confronted the guilt, confusion and self-doubt that months of coercion had left behind.

Our attorney also pursued unpaid wages and financial damages.

Then the restaurant accountant provided records showing Damian had been transferring money from Chloe’s accounts into his own funds.

Even Damian’s mother, Helen Prescott, eventually refused to defend him.

She provided a notarized statement acknowledging that her son had repeated destructive patterns he had witnessed growing up. She stopped financing his defense and agreed to cooperate with the case.

Her decision didn’t erase what had happened.

But refusing to protect wrongdoing simply because the person responsible was her son mattered.

Chloe Found Herself Again

Damian ultimately received significant prison time for his offenses and was ordered to provide financial restitution.

Chloe’s recovery took much longer.

Gradually, however, I watched pieces of my daughter return.

She reopened her graphic-design studio.

Clients came back. Then new ones arrived.

Eventually she became busy enough to hire assistants.

After speaking publicly about her experience, Chloe began receiving letters from other women living under financial control and isolation.

Today, when I watch Chloe working in the studio she rebuilt, I no longer see the frightened woman I found on that restaurant floor.

I see my daughter.

And she belongs entirely to herself.

Because love may ask for patience, sacrifice and forgiveness.

But it should never require someone to disappear.
