I had always had a complicated relationship with my mother-in-law (MIL), Sarah. She was a strong-willed woman who was used to getting her way. When she approached me with the idea of becoming a surrogate for her and my husband’s baby, I was hesitant. My husband, John, and I had been trying to have a baby for years, but nothing seemed to work. I had just given birth to our first child, Emily, and was still recovering when Sarah started pressuring me to become a surrogate again.
At first, I thought it was a crazy idea, but Sarah was persistent. She would bring up the topic every time we spoke, telling me how much she and John wanted a baby to carry on the family name. I finally gave in, thinking it would bring our family closer together.
The pregnancy was tough, but I did it for my family. When the baby boy, James, was born, I handed him over to Sarah and John, feeling a mix of emotions. They were over the moon, and I was happy for them, but a part of me was sad.
Days later, I was at home with Emily when there was a knock at the door. I opened it to find a lawyer standing there, holding baby James. “Ma’am, I’m here to take custody of the baby,” he said. My heart sank. The lawyer explained that John had had a change of heart and wanted to terminate the surrogacy agreement.
I was shocked. What was going on? Sarah had assured me that John was on board with the surrogacy. The lawyer handed me a document, and I saw that it was a termination agreement, signed by John. I felt like I’d been punched in the gut.
It turned out that John had been having second thoughts about the surrogacy and had gone behind Sarah’s back to terminate the agreement. Sarah was devastated, but I was left with a baby to care for. John had disappeared, leaving me to deal with the aftermath.
As I held James in my arms, I realized that I had been blind to the truth. My MIL had used me, and my husband had abandoned me. I was left to pick up the pieces, but little did I know, this was just the beginning of my fight for justice and the truth
