Doctors separated conjoined twins who were joined at the chest: here’s what they look like 3 years later

Posted on November 6, 2025

In Northern Ireland, the Bateson family spent years longing for a miracle. After a long and emotional journey through fertility treatments, their dream finally came true — they were expecting twin girls. But joy turned to shock when doctors delivered unexpected news: the babies were conjoined twins, fused from the chest down to the pelvis. On the ultrasound, two tiny hearts beat in unison. Annabelle and Isabelle shared a liver, intestines, bladder, and one leg — their bodies so closely connected that even expert surgeons couldn’t say whether separation would be possible.

The twins were born in March 2022 at University College Hospital in London and were immediately transferred to a leading children’s hospital. There, a team of more than thirty specialists spent months preparing for the defining operation of their lives. Using 3D-printed models and virtual simulations, they mapped every vein, vessel, and organ the girls shared — searching for a way to safely give each child her own chance at life.

  • I Married a Man Who Had a Troubled Past – On Our Wedding Night, He Looked at Me and Said, ‘It’s Too Late to Change Anything Now. There’s Something You Need to Know About That Day’

In September 2022, after an eighteen-hour operation, the miracle the family had prayed for finally arrived. Annabelle and Isabelle lay on separate tables for the first time — two tiny individuals, alive and stable. Recovery was long and challenging, with additional surgeries, weeks in intensive care, and nearly twenty procedures since birth. Yet through each stage, the twins fought on with remarkable resilience.

Today, Annabelle and Isabelle are thriving. Annabelle is outgoing and loves to sing; Isabelle is quieter, fiercely determined, and full of energy. They attend physiotherapy, use orthotic supports, and are preparing for prosthetic limbs. Their parents call every milestone “a gift we never take for granted.” The journey ahead remains complex, but their story already shines as a testament to love, perseverance, and the extraordinary power of hope.
