Musk had previously shared with Fox News’ Brett Baier that he believed he could reduce the U.S. government budget by $1 trillion within 130 days, a goal that would see him finishing by the end of May.
Musk’s position as a “special government employee” limits his work with the federal government to 130 days per year, making his time in the White House intended to be temporary. His Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is scheduled to wrap up by July 4, 2026, unless extended.
